Winter 2009

Laura Knapp, the Director of Clinical Trials for Monteris Medical, contacted the support group to let us know about a new clinical trial for people with recurrent or progressive glioblastoma multiforme brain tumors.

The trial evaluates a new device-based approach to destroying brain tumors.  The device is an MRI-guided laser probe, slightly larger than a biopsy needle that is inserted into a tumor following a biopsy.  When activated, the laser heats the tumor to the point of coagulation (approximately 60° C), which destroys it almost immediately.  The procedure is con

Text Box: ducted with the patient in an MRI scanner so that the neurosurgeon is able to observe and control the treatment to ensure the cancerous tissue is killed without damaging nearby healthy tissue.
The trial is being conducted under an FDA Investigational Device Exemption at the Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals Case Medical Center, both in Cleveland, Ohio. The sponsor is Monteris Medical, Inc. All trial-related expenses not covered by insurance, including travel, will be paid by Monteris.
Additional information on the trial is available at Text Box: www.clinicaltrials.gov and www.virtualtrials.com. Information on the technology and the procedure can be found at www.monteris.com or by contacting Monteris Medical Inc. at clinicaltrial@monteris.com.
Text Box: immediately after the blast from the past. The body automatically moves/sways to the tune and mouth sings along to holiday songs.
If you were hungry, you came to the right place. The food table was filled with an array of yummies, including vegetable and fruit trays, cheese and crackers, finger sandwiches, meatballs, just to name a few. Once again, our pharmaceutical rep friend Todd Beck was gracious enough to provide the food for the party.
The annual holiday party is a chance for survivors and family members to gather and support each other over food and music. It is a nice opportunity to see both old and new faces and find out how everyone’s doing. All Text Box: the attendees seemed to enjoy the companies as well as a break from everyday routine. Thank you everyone for another memorable year and enriching our lives by sharing your stories.
Text Box: It felt like Christmas in July as the temperature was in the 60’s on the evening of the Richmond Brain Tumor Support Group’s annual holiday party. The event took place at St. Mary’s auditorium on Tuesday, December 9, 2008. As guests entered the room, they were greeted and welcomed by the smiling faces of Denise and Cheryl Tormey. Everyone was given a raffle ticket for a chance to win a gift bag that was comprised of $100 worth of goodies.
As they proceeded, they could hear a variety of music playing by the Jazz Trio from the Richmond Jazz Society. You almost couldn’t help but stop to listen, “Did I just hear the theme song from the Brady Bunch?” Then, it’s the familiar Jingle Bells following Text Box: 2008 Holiday Party Re-Cap from Support Group Co-Facilitator Nancy Hsu
